Body-shaping procedures refer to those designed to enhance the look of your body, typically by removing excess fat and tightening loose skin. Two effective body-sculpting methods for doing so include traditional liposuction and an advanced procedure known as SlimLipo, or LifeSculpt. With decades of experience, Dr. Lewis Obi is highly skilled in both methods, and he can help determine which type of body-shaping technique may work best for you.

Body Sculpting Goals

Body-sculpting procedures are designed to achieve:

  • A slimmer physique with slimmer body contours
  • A more proportionate look
  • An increase in comfort and confidence levels

Women often turn to body sculpting to remove fat from areas that include their stomach, hips, thighs, underarm, breasts and beneath the chin. Men often opt for the procedure to remove fat from around their waist, beneath their chin or to reduce enlarged male breasts.

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction involves removing fat by suctioning it out of targeted areas of your body. The procedure typically requires a general anesthesia, may require multiple incisions and often requires an additional skin tightening procedure after the fat is removed. Fat is removed through a small tube, or cannula, attached to a vacuum after preparing fat for removal using various methods.

  • Tumuscent liposuction involves injecting a sterile solution into the area to alleviate pain, constrict blood vessels and assist in fat removal.
  • Ultrasound assisted liposuction uses a metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy to rupture the walls of the fat cells and liquefy fat for easier removal.
  • Powered liposuction relies on vibration through the rapid back-and-forth movement of a cannula to make the fat easier to remove.

SlimLipo, or LifeSculpt

SlimLipo, also called LifeSculpt, is an advanced liposuction technique that uses the power of laser to melt fat and tighten skin. In fact, SLIM is an acronym that stands for:

  • Selective
  • Laser
  • Induced
  • Melting of Fat

Dr. Obi was one of the few surgeons in the world to embrace this technique, which was developed by Palomar Medical Technology, Inc., in 2008. The procedure is far more advanced and less invasive alternative to traditional liposuction. Compared to traditional techniques, SlimLipo may require less downtime, yield a quicker recovery and be less expensive. It can also often be performed without the use of a general anesthesia.

SlimLipo may still use a fluid injection to prepare fat for removal, but it also uses specific wavelengths of laser light instead of aggressive and more traumatic methods for the actual fat removal. The laser light’s heat serves to melt fat and tighten skin during a single procedure, eliminating the need for additional surgery after fat r
