The –alpha-omega” approach to plastic surgery

The primary enemy to innovation is –the comfort zone” which I have always tried to avoid. As a result and after many years of practicing plastic surgery, I continue to strive for new techniques and a better way of practicing plastic surgery. Therefore, I would like to share some of the recent innovative techniques I have been involved with. The economic collapse of 2008 resulted in our patients requesting less expensive and less invasive procedures that were also associated with less down time. Serendipitously, Palomar Medical provided me with one of the first SlimLipo Laser Platforms six years ago and I became their –poster plastic surgeon”.

During the first five years with the SlimLipo laser platform, I developed the non-surgical laser breast lift, the –OPERA Lift” and non-surgical breast reduction techniques. I was asked to lecture at both national and international meetings. Along the way, I was fortunate to meet two major pioneers in the area of adipose based stem cell research and their clinical applications. Dr. Hee Young Lee of Seoul, Korea and Dr. Kotaro Yoshimura of Tokyo inspired me to learn and later import their technology. I became the first plastic surgeon in the U.S. to be awarded an FDA approved Medikan system that processes suctioned fat into stem cells (stromal vascular fraction-SVF). After treating the first 100 patients with these new technologies, I was asked by a major author to write a chapter in an upcoming textbook. After three years of preparation, the first major book dedicated to the aesthetic applications of stem cells has been released by Springer Publications. Subsequent magazine articles and publications followed. About the same time, I was asked to become the first plastic surgeon affiliate of the California Stem Cell Treatment Center by Dr. Mark Berman of L.A. This led to the establishment of Cell Surgical Network of Florida which I launched in July of 2013. Recently, Dr. Orlando Florete, Dr. David Heekin and Dr. Alexander Fokin (all of Jacksonville) have become members of CSN of Florida. Together we are providing patients with stem cell/PRP injections into arthritic joints as well as intravenously for degenerative, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
