Summer Skincare Series #1ÄSummer is Here and so is Melanoma

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

The summer solstice marks the moment of the year when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most toward the sun, but it’s also an opportunity for fans of ancient religions, nature photographers and everyone from around the globe to celebrate the first day of summer. Proper skin care is one of the most important ways to not only take care of yourself, but to maintain lasting, youthful looks. Now that summer is here, we all want to have that beautiful beach-bronzed skin _ but at what cost?

Every year, the rate of melanomas and skin cancer increase at an alarming rate as a result of not taking proper measures with the care of the largest organ in the body _ our skin. What is alarming is that Dr. Lewis Obi examined and or treated more than thirty skin cancer/melanoma patients during the month of June. Several of these patients have been cancer free and followed by Dr. Lewis Obi more than 30 years.

–During the first twenty years of my practice, almost all melanomas were treated by plastic surgeons.” stated Dr. Obi. Because of changes in referral patterns and insurance policies, the vast majority of patients are deprived of a plastic surgeon treating their skin cancers. A plastic surgery choice is particularly important with cancers of the face and of any melanoma which usually requires wider excisions. This past week, one of Dr. Obi’s close friends was diagnosed with a melanoma by her dermatologist and not given a choice to see a plastic surgeon. It is the recommendation of the ASPS and Dr. Lewis Obi that patients assume a pro active position with their health care providers. That is exactly what the patient friend of Dr. Obi insisted on and therefore treated by a plastic surgeon. For more information, refer to blog of April 17, 2012.
