Skin Cancers, Sun Exposure and Sunscreens Revisited

Last May, The Obi Plastic Surgery Clinic presented a comprehensive blog on the topic of skin cancers and sunscreens.  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just issued a new directive on this issue and it should be noted that more than 80% of sunscreens on the market are either unsafe and/or ineffective.  This is particularly important with our babies and children as sun exposure during these early years leads to accelerated aging, damage to the immune system, increased incidence of internal as well as skin cancers, cataracts, macular degeneration and numerous other maladies.  Therefore, our advice is for limited sun exposure and the safest sunscreen is clothing, hats, and sunglasses.  However, the majority of Americans are spraying and splashing unsafe chemicals on their skin which may not only be internally toxic, but also increase the risk of melanomas and other cancers.  Drs. Lewis Obi and John Murray together have more than 50 years of combined experience in treating melanomas and other skin cancers and both doctors agree the best treatment is prevention.  Therefore, we are republishing our recommendations from last spring along with the most recent recommendations from EWG for the selection of safe and effective sunscreens. Dr. Lewis Obi's background includes seven years as a practicing Registered Pharmacist (BSP) and along with his decades of experience as a plastic surgeon, his sage advice is worthy of your attention.

"Meet the Staff"

alyssa

Hi, my name is Alyssa.  I am the surgical technologist for Dr. Lewis Obi and Dr. John Murray.  I have worked at Obi Plastic Surgery for 4 years.  I completed my clinical rotations at Shands Jacksonville and have completed my Associate in Science degree.

On the weekend, I hula hoop at the Riverside Arts Market and perform at birthday parties and events.  I have also started a dance troupe called The Dizzy Dolls!  I also love mountain biking, spending time with my five brothers and sisters, family and friends, and playing with my bird, Rio.

Working with Dr. Obi has been a fabulous learning experience even beyond the realm of plastic surgery.  I am truly grateful for Dr. Obi giving me the opportunity to grow in my career in the medical field more than any other doctor could.  Thank you Dr. Obi!

Some Tips from Dr. John Murray and preventing Skin Cancer
        1.  Cover up with clothing and hats!
While the production of vitamin D is important, it is highly recommended that we each receive only about 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure per day.  Beyond that, we should protect ourselves with light clothing with tight weaves.  Remember, a simple T-shirt typically only offers a sun protection factor (SPF) of 4.  Obtaining an SPF rating, from clothing and sunscreens, ideally should be at least 30.  Many shirts, pants, and hats, now mark the SPF rating on the label.

2.  Cover up with Sunscreen!
Much recent research has shown that not all sunscreens are the same (even at the same SPF rating)!  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has also been shown that a majority of sunscreens are either unsafe or ineffective.  Zinc oxide based sunscreens offer an excellent range of protection (both UVA an UVB), while avoiding potential harmful effects as seen with synthetic products.  Any sunscreen must be reapplied at least every 2 hours, and at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.  While any SPF rating is beneficial, a SPF of 30 or greater seems to offer the best benefits per unit price.

3.  Check your skin!
Each of us should carefully check our skin at least monthly, looking for any lesion that is new or changing.  Photographing the skin ( to compare against for future exams) is particularly helpful.  While looking for the 'ABCDs' (lesion Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color change within the lesion, and Diameter greater than 6 mm) is helpful, simply identifying any new or changing lesion and showing that lesion to a healthcare provider is a simple, and potential life saving, technique.

4.  Proper nutrition and antioxidants!
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables provide an enormous amount of powerful antioxidants! So called free radicals are produced by ionizing radiation, such as the sun.  These free radicals then injure our cells' DNA, promoting the development of skin cancer.  However, a plant based rich in fruits and vegetables help to combat free radicals!  Remember, one apple has over 13,000 cofactors and coenzymes. and requires more calories to digest it than it contains!  Your skin, and our figure, will thank you!

PALOVIA NOW AVAILABLE AT THE RENAISSANCE

Dr. Lewis Obi and Denise Merlo are happy to announce that the Obi Plastic Surgery Clinic will provide patients with the new hand-held self treatment laser Palovia at the same discounted cost at Nordstrom and QVC.  The advantages of patients acquiring their units from the Renaissance Center are numerous.

We will provide you with instructions for treating eyelid lines and also integrate the use of this laser with almost every surgical procedure performed at our facility.  Coincidentally, Palovia, although not specified by its FDA approval, also has been found to speed up healing of fresh surgical scars and also enhance collagen rejuvenation in other areas of the body.

Patients undergoing major cosmetic procedures are encouraged to integrate the use of this device in their ongoing rejuvenation efforts.  "My visit with many of the laser experts at Palomar in May, was very convincing," said Dr. Obi.

Come in today to find out more on how to receive a complimentary Palovia
with some of our procedures!
