Botox and Facial Fillers
Juvederm | Radiesse | Fat Injections
Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse and other facial fillers are currently becoming a very popular alternative to surgical procedures among Jacksonville residents. Botox and facial fillers - such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Fat Injections - can be used in conjunction or separately during a facial rejuvenation appointment. Whichever facial filler you choose to receive, you can rest-assured knowing that these facial injections can be used to smooth or fill-in wrinkles to give a more youthful and young appearance without a surgical procedure. Each procedure is safe, economical and immensely effective. Explore our menu below and learn more about Botox and our Facial Fillers.
Dr. Lewis Obi was one of the first plastic surgeons in the southeastern United
States to use facial fillers with the introduction of the early collagen products in the
1970s. In the 1970s, a group of physicians and scientists at Stanford University were
researching alternatives to skin grafts, and developed the concept of purifying bovine
dermal collagen so thoroughly that it could be used to replace lost skin tissue. This
early research led to the development of Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants
(injectable collagen) by McGhan Medical Corporation (formerly by Collagen Aesthetics,
Inc.). Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants are FDA approved. However since then,
this early technology led to newer products such as Restylane™, Hylaform™ and
Juvederm™, all of which are smooth fillers and composed of hyaluronic acid i.e. a
component of human collagen. Since these fillers are synthetically manufactured and
are non-allergenic then there is no need for skin testing and there is no risk of biotransfer
of infectious diseases. Initially Dr. Obi had to skin test his patients for the animal collagen products which was then replaced by the human collagen.
Today we recommend both the Juvederm™ smooth fillers as well as the Radiesse™, a microsphere filler. During cosmetic surgical procedures, a combination of synthetic fillers as well as micro-fat injections are often used by Dr. Obi. Fat is almost always available and is still perhaps the best large volume filler for the face and other areas of the body. As a result of this long history and evolution of the above products, Dr. Lewis Obi has perhaps the greatest depth of experience among Jacksonville plastic surgeons.
In addition to Dr. Obi, nurse practioner Penny Velie performs a major portion of the filler procedures in both the Obi plastic surgery clinic and our on site
Jacksonville Med Spa, the Renaissance Center. Ms Velie's credentials are
exemplary and in addition to injecting fillers and Botox™, Penny is one of the
outstanding surgical nurses on the Samuel Wells Surgicenter team.
At the Obi Plastic Surgery, we provide several Facial Filler solutions to achieve a more youthful and rested look. As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movements, such as smiling, chewing and squinting. The underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up begin to break down, often leaving laugh lines, smile lines, crow's feet or facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs. Soft-tissue fillers can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face. They can also add fullness to the lips, cheeks and other areas . Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser treatment, or a recontouring procedure, such as a facelift. Choice of fillers include Juvederm™, new Juvederm* XC injections, Radiesse injections and Fat injections.
